Brass and Bronze: Less Recognizable Construction Materials
When people talk of building materials, wood, concrete, and metal usually come to mind. There are plenty of wood materials, and nearly any kind of wood can be used for building houses. Smaller objects—tools, weapons and instruments—are sometimes taken for granted, and people do not pause to wonder what they are made of. Sometimes, when they need repairs or replacement for some appliances, tools, or furniture, they are not sure what they are seeking.
Among metals, iron and steel are commonly used for construction. Iron is a very strong material that has been used for weaponry, tool-making, and housing since the Iron Age. Iron is also stronger and more easily accessible than bronze, which was the primary metallurgic material in some parts of the world. Steel, an iron alloy, is also used for making shelter and transportation.
However, there are also other construction materials that have their various uses, but are usually put aside in favor of iron, steel, or wood. It is good to know that these materials, unlike iron and its alloys, are not susceptible to rusting. Many of these, however, are not typically used for major constructions, but for aesthetic purposes and tool-making.
Brass, for example, is an alloy of copper and zinc. It is sometimes confused with bronze, which has a similar color and consistency. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin, but copper can be cast with phosphorus, aluminum, or manganese and still be called “bronze.” Brass and bronze are relatively resistant to tarnishing.
Because of its malleability, brass can easily be molded into different shapes and sizes. Many
